Thankful Thursday

I'm thankful for memories this day. As I was going through old photos on my computer I had so many memories flood my mind. I love taking pictures for that very reason. I love capturing a moment,no matter how small or big it is. I took a lot of pictures of my husband and I when we were dating/engaged. Since we moved out of town I don't have as many of us as I want now,but I try to get one every chance I get. I have taken so many photos of my 3 boys it is insane. I want to be able to show them their life growing up. I used to love looking through my parents pictures of us or them or even Grandparents. I'm thankful I have a lot of good memories of my life growing up until I moved out. I have memories with my parents, siblings, extended family, and church family. I have memories from high school, college, and the drama team. It's a blessing when I look back. If I ever need a pick me up I go through my pictures,I then realize how blessed I am. Hope you have a great Thursday. I posted some of my memories below.

Loving Our Husbands- Guest Blogger

Today I am having my first guest blogger. I'm so excited! Hollie is a dear friend of mine that I have asked to guest post today. Here is what Hollie has to say to us today:

Most conservative, Christian women are very familiar with the Ephesians 5 command to submit to your husband ("Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord." -Ephesians 5:22). There's a lot that goes into submitting to one's husband, and to be sure much has already been said on this subject. In recent weeks the Lord has brought a specific aspect of this command to my attention. Personal study, my pastor's sermons, and a study I am doing with a friend all converged toward one main point: love.
I believe many women just assume they love their husband. When asked, of course, they would affirm they do love their men! But are they really loving them ... in a Biblical way? The Scriptures give a very specific definition of love:
"Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
If you look closely at this list, it is very detailed and exact. Are you long-suffering and patient with your spouse? Or do you nag, complain, and expect him to be on the same page with you instantly in all situations? Do you ever behave rudely or sarcastically toward your spouse? Do you seek your own way over and above what is best for him? Do you guard your mind and put to death evil or mean-spirited thoughts about him? Do you trust him, or accuse him? Do you encourage him?
If you're anything like me and you're being honest, you will have to answer "no" to quite a few of those. Of course, we can never love our husbands perfectly. We can't even get close to this list without the Holy Spirit's help. But we need to try! As Christians, we ought to love Christ's law as much as He does. Loving our husbands is a choice we need to be proactive about making. It does not "just happen." Look at that list of qualities in the verse above. All of those qualities are actions, they are not warm, fuzzy, romantic feelings. (There's nothing wrong with romance, but it shouldn't be confused with the Biblical definition of love). I love this example from the book The Excellent Wife by Martha Peace that demonstrates how love is truly a choice:
Just how much of a choice agapao love can be seen in the example of a wife who becomes angry at her husband. As the intensity of her anger increases, she begins to scream and throw things. In the midst of all this mayhem, the doorbell rings. She goes to the door and opens it to find their pastor. She smiles and him and cheerfully says, "Hello." It is not likely that she felt kindly disposed. (Note: Whether or not she was truly showing agape love would depend on her outward actions and her motives.) However, she (at least outwardly) chose to show her love to her Pastor since "love is kind, and love is not rude" (1 Corinthians 13:4). The point is that this wife could have chosen to show love her husband as she did her pastor whether she felt like it or not! (p. 82)
True, that may be a somewhat extreme example. Maybe you aren't screaming and throwing things at your husband. But how does your posture, tone of voice, body language, etc. change when you talk or interact with other people compared to how it is when you interact with your husband? These were things about which I had not given much thought. I had just fallen into mindless routines and habits. Thankfully, there are some small, practical ways to work on loving are husbands more like Christ loves us.
  • I would first suggest memorizing 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, committing to memory what the Lord considers love to be is vital. We need to fill our heads and hearts with His definition, not the world's.
  • Each week, month, or however often you prefer, pick a specific quality out of the list in 1 Cor. 13:4-7 and work on it.
  • Ask your husband for input! I did this with my spouse and the feedback I got was wonderful and very helpful.
  • Pray! Ask the Spirit to convict you of ways you are not loving your man, and to give you the discipline and strength to put those sins to death.
I truly believe learning to love our husbands Biblically will allow us to better submit, respect, and encourage our men. This is why we were created! Is there a better way to glorify God than doing what He designed us for?

I want to thank Hollie for taking my offer to share on my blog. We've been friends sometime now via internet and she's a blessing and sweet friend. Isn't what she said so true? I know it convicted me in areas and I am thankful for her thoughts on this topic.

Hollie is a rescued sinner and thankful servant of Christ.  She is the happy wife of her beloved husband, Josh, and the mama of three precious souls. The Lord has placed her in a small town in Virginia where her days are spent home-schooling, child training, loving, laughing, cleaning and looking for ways to continually point her children (and herself) to Christ and His Cross. You can visit her at Dermer Family blog.

The Put On Chart

I'm so excited to write this post! While I was at  the Mom's Night Out for the home school group, a sweet friend gave me a small workbook by Doorpost. She said she thought that I would love doing it with my boys. I just got around to looking it  through it Sunday evening. She was exactly right! This is just what our family needs right now. It is a study of Colossians 3:12-14. It goes over 8 traits/actions. I broke down each week into 5 sections for 5 days to do with my boys. I was so excited to start this on Monday.

I am going to break down which sections we will do each day. You may not understand what I am taking on,but if you have it, then you will. Each week is the same questions, just different trait. So it makes it easy to do this I think and break the week up.

  • Monday- Why is the boy wearing __? (It has the trait)
  • Tuesday- What is __? & What does the Bible say about __?
  • Wednesday- Who in the Bible showed __?
  • Thursday- Put yourself in someone else's place & Learn to be more __ .
  • Friday- Sing songs, pray, and give thanks.

These are the dolls to cut out with each piece of clothing they put on. I am going to print another boy out so both boys will have one they can put clothing on. It says you can let the kids color them and then attach each piece. I think that is what I am going to do.

Each week you put on a trait and it is an item of clothing. So I thought it would be neat to make the item of clothing one day of the week, probably the first day.  I love being creative with my kids.

Here are the traits and the item of clothing:
  • Compassion- trace hands and write acts of compassion on them
  • Kindness- trace feet or draw a shoe for them to decorate
  • Humility- draw a hat or buy a foam one to decorate
  • Meekness- make a pair of glasses with straws and pipe cleaners
  • Patience- make a watch out of poster board
  • Forbearance- buy back packs from Dollar Tree and let them decorate those
  • Forgiveness- make a belt out of poster board
  • Love- make a coat out of a big paper bag and let them decorate
I think the boys will enjoy this. I know I will. It has a lot of scripture to go over and asks a lot of good questions that I know even my 4 and 5 year old can understand. I am definitely going to be checking out their site more often. I love anything that can impart the Word of God into my boys and even myself.

There will be a follow up post at the end of the study. Wednesday I will have a guest blogger, don't miss it!!

Redirecting and Making Goals

I have been doing some thinking about my blog. I am able to dedicate more time to it (for now). Things could very well change anytime with children, but as of now I feel like I can write more and read more. I started reading Blog Mom by Christin Slade and that also has been a big help. I want my blog to serve a purpose, not just be somewhere I write. I want to encourage others, particularly women, in their walk with Christ. I thought about starting a new blog directed to parenting, but that isn't the only thing I want to write about. I want to write about whatever the Lord leads me too. So I decided to just change my name back to the original name it was a year or so ago. This name was inspired by a blog called At The Well. It was a blog encouraging women to become and be Titus 2 women.

So I changed the name and will hopefully have more of a schedule. I do 2 link ups during the week with 2 other blogs. I want to start doing a post each week called Weekend Links where I publish articles or posts that I read during the week that were very worth sharing. I also want to have guest bloggers. I have one lined up hopefully for this coming week. Reading Christin's book (I'm not finished, but already have learned a lot) help me figure out some goals for my blog. I wrote down goals, passions, hobbies, and some other things. If you haven't read the book, I recommend getting it. I have a passion for being a Goldy woman, wife, and Mother. I have a passion to love my husband as God has commanded me too. I have a passion to teach my children all I can about our Lord and pump them with the Word of God. I have a passion for encouraging others, especially women.

I hope to find out who is still following me and who is not. It's hard to tell really. I don't care if just 1 person reads my blog, I hope they are encouraged. I also hope they will comment so I can know who is following me. I'm not some profound writer. I haven't got it all figured out. I am a woman who fails daily, but is striving to be more like my Lord. I just want to share the things God has used to mold me,refine me,and humble me. I want to share the miracles He has done for me and my family. I want to use it for God's glory.

If you would spread the word about my blog, I would appreciate it very much.

Happy birthday Johnathan!

Taken by a family friend just a month or so after his birth. He wasn't so happy about this.

He fell asleep during a diaper change.

I can't believe my "baby" turns 2 today. Where has time gone? He was very unexpected though we don't use any form or birth control. We found out we were expecting him when my second son,Aaron, turned 1. It was a hard pregnancy and not the delivery I wanted a all. But I don't know what my life would be like without him. He is so joyful. He is the epitome of Mama's baby. He is playful, strong willed, very smart, and loves his brothers. Thomas Johnathan Jackson (the only one with 3 names) was born via c/s on June 29,2010. He's names after the infamous Stonewall Jackson. His nick name is Binky. I love that little boy. I wanted a blonde haired baby so bad. I finally got one. They all have blue eyes, but my oldest two have dark hair. Happy birthday Binky!

Friday's Fave Five

This is a favorite each week of mine to write about.

  1. Sunday evenings... we had no service Sunday evening. It was our softball Sunday, but it was so hot that we had dinner on the grounds instead. My hubby had to go to work, but the boys and I enjoyed a relaxing evening. I loved it.
  2. Rising early... I have made it up each week early enough to do my Bible study, pray, and write on my blog some. I love getting up early and having the peace and quiet before my loud day begins.
  3. Friends... We had a couple over from our church (who we have known for awhile before hand) Tuesday evening. We had a good time of talking, eating, and watching the kids play. I love having friends that are like minded in so much.
  4. Playtime... my boys love playing like we are various animals and we play this a lot. Imagine me crawling around on the floor making cow, deer,or bear noises. We make us a home and pretend to be finding food or running from other animals/people. It's these memories my boys will remember though it's not so easy on the knees.
  5. Moms Night Out... wooo hoooo! The homeschool group I stay in touch with has this once a month if they can and they are having it Friday night. My hubby happens to be working a day shift and I will be able to go kid free to it. I am looking forward to some more fellowship with like minded ladies and barrels of laughs.
Join Susanne @ Living to Tell the Story for Friday's Fave Five. Glean back over your week and share some of your favorites.

I will be having a guest posting next week. It is my first time to do so. Stay tuned for more details!
